A 69-year-old Waterford man has denied he raped a 12-year-old girl who gave birth some nine months after the alleged incident and told the jury he was sterile.
Earlier, the Central Criminal Court jury was told that DNA samples indicated the accused could be the baby's father. Forensic scientist Mr Michael Burrington said they showed a 350:1 probability that the accused was the baby's father.
The man has pleaded not guilty to raping the girl in or about July 1997. Mr Justice Smith is due to address the jury today.
