Washington - US scientists have identified for the first time an adult stem cell in mice capable of transforming itself into almost any organ of the body, research that paves the way for new treatments for humans.

The researchers, who reported their findings in scientific journal Cell, found that stem cells identified in the bone marrow of adult mice reproduced cells that specialised to form organs as diverse as the liver, the lungs, the intestines and the skin. Stem cells had so far been identified only in embryos.
