THE BODY of an elderly pensioner missing for eight days was found yesterday.
Searches had intensified for William Madden snr, from Garryduff, Newcastlewest, Co Limerick, after his car was located in Brosna, Co Kerry, late on Sunday evening.
The 82-year-old was last seen alive on the evening of Sunday October 17th at Riverside, Abbeyfeale, where he had been visiting a friend.
Gardaí from Newcastle West and members of Abbeyfeale and District Search and Rescue began a week-long search with up to 300 volunteers joining in the effort to locate Mr Madden.
His son Liam also launched an appeal on local radio to help with the search for his father.
The 82-year-old’s body was located at about 10am and gardaí say they are not treating his death as suspicious.
According to public relations officer Helen Broderick of Abbeyfeale search and rescue Mr Brosnan may have lost his way and slipped. “We all feel tremendous sympathy for the family involved, it was a long arduous week for them but now at least they have closure,” she said.
“The man had obviously lost his way, slipped into a drain and was unable to get out of it,” she added
A search operation made up of five teams was involved in the recovery operation, with hundreds of volunteers taking part in the search over the past week.
The Garda thanked members of the public for their assistance in the search.
