Gardaí recovered the body of David White (18) from the Grand Canal on Saturday, almost a week after he went missing with his friend Shane Coughlan in Clondalkin.

The body was found about 150 yards from the spot where Shane Coughlan's body was recovered last Wednesday.

Local parish priest Fr John Wall, said it was a "very, very sad case" for the community. Funeral arrangements had not been finalised last night, but the burials are expected to take place later this week. The bridge on the Fonthill Road was covered in bouquets of flowers and Irish flags yesterday.

David White's teenage brother Paul wrote several messages on a large Irish flag. "Dave, I don't know what to say to you. You broke my heart, but because it's you, I'll forgive you. You are never ever going to leave my thoughts. There is only two times I think about and miss you, and that's day and night. Love forever, your bro Paul."

Another Irish flag carried the message: "Tracey loves David, 26th April '04 - forever".

Rough winds had blown some flowers onto the road and a thank you card to Shane Coughlan lay in a pool of water. He was known as "Cocko" to his friends.

One bouquet carried the message: "Cocko, you will be missed. Man United beat Liverpool today".

David White's family had moved from Clondalkin to Carrickmore Avenue, Citywest, while Shane Coughlan (18) came from Millpark in Clondalkin.

The two friends were socialising at a house in Clondalkin late on Saturday, February 24th. They then left to go to a nearby 24-hour shop at an Esso filling station at about 4.30am.

Witnesses came forward to say that they had seen the young men between 7.30am and 8am not far from the filling station. David's brother Paul had also received a missed call from David's mobile phone at 6.30am, but no message was left.

The teenagers' families raised the alarm on Sunday afternoon and David White's boot was found on the canal bank on Tuesday. The Garda Water Unit then began searching the canal between the ninth and 11th locks.

Shane Coughlan's body was removed from the canal just under the Fonthill Road bridge at about midday last Wednesday. Garda divers extended their search for David White in the following days and a land search was also carried out.

Supt John Harnett of Clondalkin Garda station said David White's body had been discovered near the Fonthill Road bridge shortly after 1pm on Saturday, about 50 yards away from where his boot was found. Postmortems found that the deaths were due to drowning.

Speaking at the scene afterwards, Fr Wall said the whole community was devastated. "But I suppose it gives some sort of closure. It's extremely sad, two lads in the prime of their youth, boys really, I suppose."
