A 14-year-old girl died in hospital today after a road accident which also claimed the life of a teenage boy.

A 14-year-old girl died in hospital today after a road accident which also claimed the life of a teenage boy.

The children were walking home from school when they were hit by a car on a rural road near Florencecourt, Co Fermanagh yesterday evening.

Fifteen year-old Nathan Gault, from the town, died last night. They were walking on the Croaghrim Road with another 15-year-old boy when the incident happened around 6.30pm.

Police investigating the incident — which was not a hit-and-run — made a renewed appeal for information from anyone who saw it or came across the scene afterwards.

SDLP Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher said news of the tragedy had devastated the people of the area. Mr Gallagher said: “We have got to find ways of keeping people, and particularly our young people, safe on the roads.”

Fermanagh and South Tyrone Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott said the deaths were a tragedy for the families involved and for the wider community.

He said: “My sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to the families at this time. Words to describe this tragedy are almost impossible to find.

“Nothing can replace a young life like this and the heartbreak for the families must be unbearable.”
