A member of the regional council of in the Iraqi city of Basra has been shot dead along with two bodyguards.
Hazim Tawfiq al-Anachi was assassinated at a checkpoint in the southern Iraqi city.
"At the checkpoint, there were some people wearing police uniforms who asked the driver to stop. Then they opened fire," a council spokesman said, adding that another man in the car was wounded.
Militants have attacked or killed several senior Iraqi officials, who they accuse of collaborating with US-led forces in the country.
A senior Defence Ministry official was gunned down near his Baghdad home late on Sunday.
Last week, gunmen killed the governor of the northern province of Nineveh and two of his bodyguards as he drove in a convoy to Baghdad. A senior official from the Industry and Minerals Ministry was also shot dead in Baghdad.
On Saturday, the justice minister's convoy was attacked by a suicide car bomb. The minister escaped, but five bodyguards were killed.
