Less than four years after the trial of the so-called "Beast of Florence" for the multiple murders of courting couples, Italy is again wondering whether it has another serial killer in its midst.

Two young women were shot through the head in the toilets of moving trains in Italy's north-western Riviera region over the past week and the circumstances have led police to believe the killer of both is the same person.

Italian television and newspapers suspect these two murders could be linked to the mysterious slaying of six prostitutes this year near the Riviera towns of Savona and Albenga.

Ms Maria Angela Rubino was found dead on Saturday night on a train which had left Genoa for Ventimiglia. She was shot in the back of the neck in a toilet which was locked when her body was found by cleaners.

The killing of Ms Rubino was similar to the murder on Easter Sunday of Ms Elisabetta Zoppetti, a nurse from Milan.

She was also found dead in a locked toilet of a train that had left the same Liguria region on the Italian Riviera. She was shot in the back of the head.
