Rail services to Co Mayo were disrupted today after an engineering train derailed on the track outside Ballyhaunis station.

No-one was injured when four carriages of the train derailed but the line has been blocked, a spokesman for Iarnród Éireann said.

The company said it hopes to have services back to normal by Friday. Until then bus transfers have been arranged for passengers travelling from Castlerea to all the Mayo stations.

Meanwhile in Cork, morning Cork/Dublin services were disrupted for a short time due to unofficial action by four temporary contract line inspectors over the renewal of their contracts.

The staff objected to the conditions of the new contracts, the company’s spokesman said, though they had not changed from those in their previous contracts.

The dispute ended when with an agreement with union official to reschedule a meeting with the Rights Rights Commission over the weekend or early next week to discuss the matter, he said.

The meeting was supposed to have taken place yesterday.

The union officials could not be contacted for comment on the issue.

Iarnród Éireann expects all services to and from Cork should operate as normal tomorrow.
