A father and his 15-year-old daughter were among seven people killed in road accidents in the State over the weekend. Four other people were injured.
Five people died, and four were injured, in two road accidents in Co Kildare within the space of 40 minutes on Saturday night.
In the first accident, two cars collided on the N4, the main Dublin to Mullingar road, at Ballyonan, Moyvalley, at 8.50 p.m. Gardai said the cars were travelling in opposite directions. A man and his wife and daughter were travelling in one car. The man died instantly in the collision. His 15-year-old daughter was taken to the Longford Westmeath hospital in Mullingar, where she died at around 3.30 a.m. yesterday.
The man's wife was seriously injured in the collision, gardai said. She was taken to Blanchardstown hospital, where her condition was yesterday described as stable.
Gardai said the other car had three male occupants, one of whom was killed instantly in the collision. The other two were seriously injured. They were taken to Blanchardstown hospital, where their condition was described as stable.
The road was closed after the accident but has been reopened.
Gardai have not officially named the people who were killed in the accident at Moyvalley.
Gardai are investigating the circumstances of the accident, and are appealing for witnesses to contact Trim Garda station on 046-31222, or the Garda confidential number: 1800-666111. They have also reiterated their appeal for caution on the roads.
The second accident occurred 40 minutes later, at 9.30 p.m., at Kilmeague, Naas, when a four-wheel-drive vehicle hit a ditch. The occupants were four men in their 20s.
Two men died instantly in the accident. Gardai yesterday named them as Mr Paul Kenny (23) and Mr Nigel Maher (22), both from Kilmeague.
Gardai say the two other occupants were injured and were taken to Naas hospital.
In another accident, a 17year-old man was killed when he lost control of his car and crashed into a fence at Ballydehob, Co Cork. The accident occurred at 3.30 a.m. yesterday.
The victim has been named by gardai as Mr Ian Daly, from Hollyhill, Ballydehob, Co Cork.
A 29-year-old driver died in a road accident near Glenveigh National Park, Co Donegal, yesterday. The man's car swerved off the road close to Dunlewey at around 6.30 p.m. He died at the scene. Gardai said the man was from Donegal.
Gardai said they recovered the body of a man from Tremone Bay, Co Donegal, at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday.
Gardai removed another body from the Galway docks on Saturday. They said they are not treating the discovery of either body as suspicious.
