Seven people have been killed on Irish roads over the bank holiday weekend, five of them in the Republic. The deaths bring to 273 the number of people killed on roads in the State so far this year.
A 22-year-old man died when the car in which he was a passenger overturned at Forenaughts Little, Naas, Co Kildare, shortly before 2am yesterday.
His body was removed to Naas General Hospital where a postmortem examination was expected yesterday.
Gardaí at Mullingar are investigating a fatal incident at Crowenstown, Delvin, Co Westmeath on the Athboy-Delvin road at 3.40am yesterday. It is believed that a young man was struck by a vehicle which left the scene.
Gardaí are anxious to speak to all road users who were on the Athboy-Delvin road between 3am and 4am on Monday. The contact number is 044 934 8915.
In the North, two people were killed on the roads on Sunday. One person died and two were seriously injured at the Glenshane Pass on the Derry-Belfast road on Sunday afternoon, and a woman pedestrian was killed when she was hit by a motorcycle near Newcastle, Co Down.
In Co Clare, a man died in the early hours of Saturday morning after his car struck a ditch and overturned. Patrick Murphy (29) from the Maghera-Clooney area of the county, died following the single-vehicle crash at about 3am at Cragg, two kilometres from the village of Tulla on the main Gort road.
A postmortem examination is expected to take place today at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick. Gardaí at Killaloe have appealed for any witnesses to contact them at 061-376242.
The elderly man killed in Friday's crash in Co Tipperary was named as Fr Roger Kinane (83), Toureen, Rossmore, Co Tipperary. The collision, at 6.45pm on Friday, took place at Parkstown, Horse and Jockey, near Thurles. The priest died when the car he was driving collided with a truck.
In Gorey, Co Wexford, Mark Gilligan (17) died in a single-vehicle incident which took place at 8.30pm on Saturday at Annaghmore, Hollyfort. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact gardaí at Gorey on 053-943 0690.
An 18-month-old baby girl was recovering in hospital last night after she was accidentally struck by a car driven by her grandfather in the driveway of a house in Kilkee in west Clare.
The toddler, who was taken to hospital in Ennis in a serious condition yesterday morning, was later transferred to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick. Her condition was described last night as serious, but stable.
