Seven people, including two young children, were injured when they were struck by a car during 11th Night festivities in Northern Ireland, police said today.
Officers were trying to establish what happened in the incident near a bonfire on Belfast’s Donegall Road just after 1am amid conflicting claims.
The two children remain in hospital under observation but none of those involved was seriously hurt.
Officers are still trying to trace the male driver of the car, believed to be a silver Peugeot.
Democratic Unionist councillor Ruth Patterson said the community was stunned by what had happened.
“There was a scene of utter chaos afterwards,” she said. “People were lying on the road screaming and there were nine ambulances there helping the injured.”
The incident in Coolfin Street off the Donegall Road happened as nationalist rioters and police clashed at the nearby Broadway roundabout.
