A man was seriously ill in hospital last night after fighting erupted in west Belfast early yesterday morning. Police were called to Moyard Parade, off the Springfield Road, after they received reports of serious fighting involving a number of men armed with knives.

The PSNI said that two of its officers were injured, not seriously, when they arrived at the scene. Police said the officers were struck by a car and that they in turn fired one shot at the vehicle.

No one was injured in the shooting incident but Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan was informed and will investigate the incident.

Four people were arrested at the scene. It is understood that at least three people were injured in the fighting.
