Strong gales are forecast this evening and for most of the weekend in what Met Éireann predicts will be one of the windiest spells this winter.
Householders, especially in Dublin, are being urged to prepare for the possibility of flooding in coastal areas with high seas expected to batter the coast.
Dublin council officials are meeting tonight to consider closing the Liffey Boardwalk tomorrow. Sandbags are also due to be delivered to the Clontarf and Sandymount areas over the weekend.
Independent TD Finian McGrath called for vigilance and urged residents to block their driveway and access to their property. "High tides are expected over the coming few days, in particular on Monday morning," he said.
Met Éireann says winds will reach strong gale force along the strands from Roches Point to Loop Head to Malin Head.
The strongest gales are expected to peak on Monday in the northern parts of Ireland and the weather will be particularly severe.
Sailors and fishermen are also being warned of hostile conditions on the Irish Sea with winds from the south and southwest expected to reach force 6 at times.
The most at-risk areas today will be along the east and southeast coasts from Howth Head to Carnsore Point to Valentia.
