A man who alleged he was sexually abused by Dr Michael Shine at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda has settled his High Court action.

The case was listed for hearing yesterday, but Éanna Mulloy SC, for the man, told Mr Justice Éamon de Valera it had been settled without admission of liability and could be struck out.

No details of the settlement were revealed and the terms are believed to be confidential.

In his action against Dr Shine, Fair Street, Drogheda, the man, now in his 50s, claimed he had been sent in 1979 to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital after sustaining a serious knee injury while playing a football match. He said he was referred by his GP to Dr Shine, then a consultant orthopaedic specialist who practised at the hospital.
