Shakespeare's magic blossoms in Cork

Cork Theatre group Corcadorca doesn't believe in playing it safe

Cork Theatre group Corcadorca doesn't believe in playing it safe. Not content with re-enacting The Trial of Jesus on Patrick's Hill last year, the group's next production, A Midsummer Night's Dream, is to be held outdoors at Fitzgerald's Park and Fota Arboretum.

The theatre group's production of the Shakespearean comedy will be held promenade style. The audience will be led by a band of bawdy musicians and it will appear as though fairies from another world are orchestrating the evening.

Director Pat Kiernan has combined a professional and amateur cast including Gerry Walsh as the mischievous Puck, a source of much confusion in the play, and Liz Bracken as Hippolyta and Titania.

Eight-year-old Robert Wong is the youngest member of the cast. He is the source of an argument between the King and the Queen of the fairies, with Oberon becoming jealous of Titania's attachment to the young boy.

Aoife O'Sullivan (10) is the head of the fairies and has been in drama group CADA Productions for close to seven years. She says that "learning Shakespeare can be hard", but is eagerly anticipating the production.

Corcadorca's version of the play will remain faithful to the original text, while the combination of natural and artificial lighting promises to create a magical feeling in the park.

Since its founding in 1991, Corcadorca has garnered numerous awards including the Best Fringe Award at the Dublin Theatre Festival in 1996.

The theatre group was also nominated for a special award at the 2000 Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Awards for its Trial of Jesus production last year.

A Midsummer Night's Dream takes place from June 21st-30th at Fitzgerald's Park, and from July 2nd-7th at Fota Arboretum. Bookings (£10, £8 concessions) can be made at 021-4270022.
