SIPTU has begun balloting its Aer Lingus members at Shannon for industrial action up to and including strike action in opposition to job cuts being proposed by the airline.

Last week the airline said it intended to cut its workforce in Shannon by 100 following a "significant decline in third-party [ground] handling business".

A SIPTU spokesman in Shannon, Mr Tony Carroll, told ireland.comthat although the company says it is not seeking compulsory redundancies "it has not explained what happens next if they don't want to go".

According to the airline, the redundancies will not be concentrated on a particular grade.
