A major search was expected to restart at first light this morning for a Co Tipperary man who fell overboard from a passenger boat on Lough Derg on Saturday evening.
The alarm was raised shortly before 7pm on Saturday after the Tipperary man in his early 30s fell overboard from a pleasure craft two miles north of Killaloe.
It is believed that the man was not wearing a lifejacket when he fell into the water. The search was suspended at 10.10pm on Saturday, and recommenced at first light yesterday.
Three boats of divers took turns to search an area of Lough Derg north of Killaloe, while kayaks and jet-skis were also used. Members of the missing man's family were also aiding the various search and rescue units.
A spokesman for Killaloe/Ballina Search and Rescue said last night: "There has been a huge local effort in the search, and has involved personnel from the Garda Diving Unit, the Mountshannon Search and Rescue, the Dromineer RNLI, Limerick Search and Rescue, a unit from the University of Limerick (UL) and the Civil Defence from north Tipperary and Clare."
Local people were also involved in shore searches, while gardaí from north Tipperary, the Lough Derg lifeboat and a Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter also took part.
