Lagos - Islamic Sharia law was formally declared yesterday in Nigeria's Muslim-dominated Zamfara State despite opposition, officials and residents said.
"The launch has been carried out today in Gusau, the state capital. We and our neighbouring states are very happy about it," an official in the state's protocol department said.
The ceremony, witnessed by tens of thousands of people, was also attended by diplomats and representatives of some neighbouring Muslim-dominated states.
