Newcastle 3 Leverkusen 1
Alan Shearer scored a first-half hat-trick as Newcastle eliminated last season's runners-up, Bayer Leverkusen, from the Champions League with a 3-1 victory at St James' Park.
The former England captain completed his treble inside 36 minutes to give Newcastle growing hope of qualifying for the quarter-finals.
Newcastle have six points in Group A with two games left.
Leverkusen are out of the competition having lost all four of their games.
Shearer headed Newcastle in front after five minutes and, after some poor Leverkusen defending, nodded in his second from close range six minutes later.
Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given saved an Oliver Neuville penalty and, soon after, Shearer slammed home a spot kick awarded after Kieron Dyer was dragged back in the area.
Substitute Marko Babic neatly pulled one back for Leverkusen after 73 minutes.
Ajax 0 Arsenal 0
Ajax and Arsenal fought out a low-key scoreless draw in their Champions League Group B match tonight.
The game lacked the quality of last week's Highbury clash, though goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont did have to make saves from Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira in the first half.
Ajax's Romanian defender Christian Chivu went close but his 38th-minute free kick was headed off the line by Arsenal defender Ashley Cole.
Lauren then deflected a Zlatan Ibrahimovic shot over the bar seven minutes after the restart.
The draw sees both sides on six points after four games.
Both teams will be delighted with the result as Valencia lost at home to Roma.
Valencia 0 Roma 3
Francesco Totti scored twice to steer Roma to a remarkable 3-0 win away to Valencia and resurrect their Champions League hopes.
Roma were without a point in Group B going into tonight's clash with the Spanish champions and another defeat would have signaled an early exit.
Totti, making his return after three weeks on the sidelines, turned in a superb performance to smash Valencia's unbeaten home record in the Champions League and leave everything in the group still to play for.
Valencia have five points, one behind Arsenal and Ajax with Roma propping up the table on three points.
Totti headed in the first goal from a Vincent Candela corner on 25 minutes and five minutes later the captain swept in right-footed for the second.
The Italian international was also instrumental in the third, slipping a pass for Emerson to convert on 36 minutes, and although Valencia improved after the break the Roma defence remained solid and a comeback never looked likely.
Inter Milan 0 Barcelona 0
Barcelona are through to the quarter-finals after a hard-fought draw with Inter Milan at the San Siro.
The result ends Barca's record-equalling run of 11 straight wins in European competition but that will be of little concern to Radomir Antic's side who were content to get a point from the outset.
The point does little to help Inter, though, as they face a battle with Newcastle for the second qualification spot.
Inter dominated from the start and Christian Vieri had the ball in the net in the second minute but it was ruled offside.
Vieri had the best chance of the game three minutes after the break when Giovanni Pasquale found him with a cross from the left but the Italy striker missed the target with a free header.
