The draw for the third round of the FAI Harp Lager Cup was made this afternoon in the Alexander Hotel in Dublin. A total of 18 teams were entered into the draw and not surprisingly there are many intriguing fixtures to mull over.
Reigning league champions and Cup holders, Shelbourne, must travel north to face Derry City in what is arguably the tie of the round. Shamrock Rovers, who boast the best cup tradition in the country, have been drawn away to league strugglers Finn Harps.
Bohemians manager, Roddy Collins, explained he was "happy with the draw" after his Dublin side were drawn at home to Bray Wanderers. The Co. Wicklow side looked very impressive in their second round 5-0 drubbing of Sligo Rovers and many fancy the seaside club to mount a strong challenge on this year’s competiton.
Collins explained: "The Cup is always a difficult competition but we were looking for a home draw...so I’m happy with that. We are geared up for the clash as we have played Bray twice in the league this season."
Shamrock Rovers manager, Damien Richardson, was "very happy" with the draw away to Finn Harps. The former Shelbourne boss was quick to dismiss suggestions that Harps’ off field problems would benefit Shamrock Rovers.
"The problems at Finn Harps will only boost the fans...they are sure to get behind their team...it’s going to be a difficult task. The first round of the cup throws up uncertainty but after the second round there is a definite feeling of certainty...we know what we have to do."
Junior Cup holders Portmarnock will host First Division outfit Dundalk. Portmarnock manager John Hayes was "thrilled" with the draw, especially with the "added advantage of a home tie."
