Irish consumers spent an average of €1,700 each on online purchases last year, according to a new survey.
The survey of 1,000 people, which was carried out by iReach on behalf of Visa Europe, reveals that online shoppers believe they can snap up more bargains online than on the high street.
According to the survey, nine out of ten shoppers believe they can save money on goods by purchasing them online, with 72 per cent stating that they thought they could save up to a third on the cost of products by buying them via the internet.
Last year, the average spend for men online was €1,950 compared to €1,550 for women.
Holidays, concert tickets, and CDs and DVDs were the most popular purchases made. Only 13 per cent of Irish consumers currently purchase their groceries online
Men are more likely to shop for electronic products compared to women who generally opt for cosmetic or fashion purchases, according to the survey.
Despite the current economic climate, 24 per cent of respondents said they expected to spend more on online this year.
