"I want to condemn absolutely the attempted murder yesterday of Garda Paul Sherlock in Dublin city centre. This was a despicable, disgraceful act, and clearly shows there is a big challenge for politicians and for society as a whole as we move forward to support policing in their efforts to eradicate the criminality that undoubtedly exists on the island.

"I say that against the backdrop of the decisions that Sinn Féin has taken over the course of recent times to give now, in the context of the new political dispensation, our wholehearted support to the PSNI in their efforts to combat criminality in the North.

"Of course, in recent months a member of the PSNI was shot by a loyalist paramilitary, and I think that it's quite clear that all of us now need to work together to ensure that we give full support to policing, North and South, and to deal with criminality if needs be in an all-island way."
