September 2006:Sgt Mark Clarke was shot in the arm and chest while on duty outside a house on Monasterboice Road in Crumlin.
The house had been shot at an hour earlier as part of a dispute between families in the area. Sgt Clarke was part of a Garda presence which was preserving the scene and offering protection to residents. A 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man were charged.
October 2004:Garda Joe Glackin was shot in the hand during an attempted robbery of a petrol station in north Dublin. Gardaí were called by late-night customers who saw a number of raiders inside the Statoil station in Finglas. As the men attempted to escape, Garda Glackin received a gunshot wound to the hand which required more than 20 stitches. One raider - Kenneth Williams (22), Barry Avenue, Finglas West - was jailed for five years.
December 2001:Det Sgt John Eiffe was killed during an operation in Abbeyleix, Co Laois, to catch a gang of known Dublin criminals who allegedly planned to rob a bank in the town. Then garda commissioner Pat Byrne said after the incident it appeared Det Sgt Eiffe was shot dead by a fellow garda during the suspects' capture.
January 1998:Det Garda Fergal Patwell from the Emergency Response Unit was shot during a raid on an apartment off North Brunswick Street. Gardaí forced the apartment door, which had been barricaded with furniture. They then forced a door of a room, also barricaded, and as Garda Patwell was climbing over the barricade a single shot was fired. Garda Patwell was wearing a bulletproof vest and was injured in the shoulder.
June 1996:Det Garda Jerry McCabe was shot dead during an abortive IRA raid on a post-office delivery van in Adare, Co Limerick. The first of four men convicted for the killing - Michael O'Neill from Patrickswell, Co Limerick - was released from prison earlier this year. Three others who were also convicted of the manslaughter of the garda are likely to be released within the next two years.
