Thousands of people throughout Northern Ireland observed a two-minute silence yesterday to mark the 80th anniversary of the Armistice. The Duke of Edinburgh led the tribute in Belfast's Waterfront Hall where delegates from the Commonwealth were attending a conference on the Duke's awards scheme.

Shoppers and passers-by gathered to pay tribute at the Cenotaph in the centre of Belfast. Children from Protestant and Catholic primary schools in east Belfast took part in a remembrance ceremony at the war memorial on the Woodstock Road.

The occasion was also marked in Derry at the Cenotaph in the Diamond and at other locations.

The Northern Ireland Territorial Army Gunners from the 206 Battery Royal Artillery fired a "Minute Gun" at the Somme Heritage Centre at Conlig, Co Down.
