Mikael Silvestre salvaged Manchester United's title dream with a late winner against Leeds at Old Trafford tonight.

Manchester United lost the lead given to them by Lucas Radebe's own goal when Mark Viduka headed Leeds level 18 minutes in the 64th minute.

But just when it seemed they would have to settle for a draw which would have handed a huge advantage to Arsenal, Silvestre stole into the box to nod home David Beckham's free-kick to drag United to within five points of the Gunners with nine games still remaining.

United were losing their shape in a desperate search for a winner and, having never really been at their best, it looked like a forlorn struggle.

Yet, for the second time, salvation came from an unlikely source. In 179 previous appearances for the Old Trafford outfit, Silvestre had found the net just twice.

But when Beckham swung over a free-kick 11 minutes from time, there was Frenchman, rising high, to plant the ball past Robinson for his first goal of the season.

Venables responded with a double change, replacing Raul Bravo and Barmby with Stephen McPhail and James Milner.

Leeds thought they had won themselves a penalty when Poll responded to Viduka's tumble in the area with a shrill blow of his whistle, only to signal for a free-kick against the Australian striker.

Van Nistelrooy was replaced by Gary Neville in the final minute as United looked to hang on to their lead.

They achieved that aim with a bit of a struggle but worryingly ended the match with Keane as a temporary centre-forward after picking up a late injury when all three substitutes had been used.
