Actress and singer Eileen Reid has accepted an undisclosed settlement of her £30,000 claim for damages against the Gaiety Theatre and a pantomime production company.

Ms Reid, who sued in her married name, Ms Eileen Day, of Grange Park Road, Raheny, Dublin, was injured when a scene in the pantomime, Aladdin, went wrong.

She claimed she had injured her left shoulder while playing the role of Widow Twanky in the Gaiety in 1996. During the scene Widow Twanky was being wheeled on to the stage.

The character had been caught horizontally between the rollers of a clothes mangle and, according to the original plot, was to have been rescued by other members of the cast.

When the mangle came to a halt, however, the actress - due to one of the rollers becoming loose - had been catapulted across the stage. Despite "pain and humiliation" Ms Reid had lived up to the true tradition of the theatre that the show must go on and had carried on as usual, completing the full run of the panto.

Mr Desmond Dockery, counsel for Ms Reid, told Judge Liam Devally yesterday in the Circuit Civil Court that the action against Siboney Ltd, trading as Ground Work Productions, and Silverthorn Investments Ltd, owners of the theatre, had been settled and could be struck out.
