Sinn Féin today said that "nothing short of Irish unity and independence will suffice" after a poll suggested 41 per cent of Britons believed the North should be reunified with the Republic.

The poll shows that just 26% of people questioned in Britain believed Northern Ireland should remain in the UK.

It found that 41 per cent believed it should be joined with the Republic.

Ms Michelle Gildernew, Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, said: "It is to be hoped that Tony Blair gives sufficient consideration to the findings of this poll.

"There is clearly a total lack of enthusiasm amongst the population in Britain for a continuation of the union between Britain and this part of Ireland."

She said viewing the findings from a republican perspective, she found it encouraging that the Sinn Féin analyses in respect of British political involvement in Irish affairs had been accepted by the public.

"Tony Blair will do well to take these findings on board and respond in a manner which will meet the approval of an overwhelming majority in Ireland and in Britain. It is now clear that nothing short of Irish unity and independence will suffice," she said.

Mr Alex Attwood of the SDLP said the poll indicated that the people of Britain "are comfortable with whatever the people of Ireland decide in their future".

"This opinion poll confirms that it is for those of us who believe in and aspire to the unity of the people of Ireland to persuade those who are not so inclined as to its value and appeal". The poll found 3 per cent blamed unionists and 5 per cent republicans while 64 per cent blamed both sides equally for the problems in the peace process.

The Guardiansaid the poll was carried out over the weekend - between August 17th and 19th.
