Siptu have called for more armed Garda escorts to be included in a package of measures to improve the security of cash-in-transit (CIT) workers.

The union's general president Jack O'Connor is due to meet Minister for Justice Michael McDowell next Tuesday to discuss the increase in armed robberies of security vans carrying cash.

The latest incident happened in Dublin city centre today when two armed, masked men unsuccessfully tried to rob cash from a van delivering to an ATM at the ilac centre on Henry St.

Siptu are also calling on the minister to make it compulsory for firms to use technologies which deny workers access to a cash delivery from the time it is loaded to the time it is deposited at the ATM.

It also wants secure parking spaces for cash deliveries and collections to be provided by clients.

CIT drivers should also be exempt from sanction if the need arises to park on double yellow lines or the pavement for security reasons.

The installation of CCTV at ATM outlets and on CIT vans; and State funding for a "major staff training initiative" is also advocated.

Mr McDowell last week warned security firms they could lose their licence if they fail to observe a voluntary code of practice developed last year to address the growing number of robberies.

He also said a mandatory licensing proposal form the Private Security Association would also be seriously considered. There has been a spate of armed robberies on CIT vans in recent weeks in which almost €1.5 million was stolen in three well-organised armed raids.
