SIPTU is to seek an urgent meeting with the Minister of State for the Environment, Mr Bobby Molloy, over plans to issue 3,000 new taxi plates.
This follows the union's establishment of a branch for Dublin taxi-drivers on Saturday at an inaugural meeting in the National Stadium, reportedly attended by more than 800 drivers.
The union's regional secretary for the Dublin private sector, Mr Jack Nash, estimated that with application forms already received the branch would have over 1,600 members.
