Four men were charged yesterday with incitement to hatred arising out of an alleged racist attack in Dublin last year. Two others were brought with them before Dublin District Court on charges relating to the same incident.
The four charged under Section 2 of the Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act are accused of using the word "nigger" or "niggers" during an alleged attack on Mr David Richardson (46) and his son Christian (25) at Pearse Street, Dublin, on June 11th. Mr David Richardson received a number of stab wounds and was left in a critical condition in hospital.
The four were Mr Paul Fitzpatrick (20), a shopfitter; Mr Paul Barry (29), unemployed; Mr David Colclough (29), unemployed, all of Pearse Street; and Mr Darren Kenny (31) a pipelayer, Meade Terrace, Dublin. Mr Fitzpatrick was also charged with assaulting Mr David Richardson and with violent disorder.
Mr Barry and Mr Kenny were charged with assaulting Mr Christian Richardson and violent disorder. Mr Colclough had been charged last year with assault causing serious harm to Mr David Richardson and has been in custody on that charge since September last.
The other two men charged yesterday were Mr Brian Lee (23), Raheen Park, Ballyfermot, who is accused of assaulting Mr Christian Richardson and violent disorder, and Mr Phillip Uzell (20), Boyne Street, Dublin, charged with discarding evidence and with assaulting another man accompanying the Richardsons.
Det Sgt Oliver McEnerney told the court he arrested all six yesterday morning. In reply to the charges, Mr Lee said: "I am sorry about that, he kicked me and I was protecting myself." Mr Uzell said: "Yes, I was in a fight with that fellow. Yes, I threw it away but I did not know what it was used for."
The others either replied "not guilty" or "nothing to say".
Judge William Early set bail for all except Mr Colclough in their own bonds of £300 with independent sureties of £600 each.
He remanded them all in custody with consent to bail to appear in Cloverhill District Court on May 25th.
