SIX CHILDREN were rescued from the sea in Co Donegal after being caught in a current while swimming.
The incident happened at Tramore strand close to Rosbeg, outside Portnoo, Co Donegal, yesterday afternoon. A 47-year-old man who helped some of the children to safety was then taken to Letterkenny General Hospital.
One of the children was rescued by a rigid inflatable boat and taken ashore. Two lifeguards who arrived at the scene from a nearby beach when the alarm was raised were also rescued.
An onlooker contacted Malin Head Coast Guard service at 1.48 yesterday afternoon. Arranmore lifeboat was called to the scene and the coastguard rescue helicopter based at Strandhill, Co Sligo, as well as the coastguard in Killybegs were also alerted.
Gardaí and the coastguard service said the children were not taken to hospital.
