Six lighthouses are due to close as part of a review of navigational aids around the coast, writes Lorna Siggins. The light range is also to be reduced at 44 lighthouses, while two lighthouses will have their range increased.
Some 18 buoys, five fog signals, three beacons and one radar beacon are also to be discontinued as part of the review by the General Lighthouse Authorities for the Irish and British coastlines. Technological developments in satellite navigation have been cited as the main reason for the changes.
