Six police officers were injured in Newry, Co Down, early this morning as they tried to stop a car suspected of involvement in ram-raids.

One officer was pinned against a wall as the car fled a police checkpoint in the town. The officer fired a number of shots and a man arrested later had a gunshot wound to the arm.

The incident follows ram raids on a tool-hire firm, an electrical goods shop, and a newsagents, which began at 1 a.m. A total of six officers were hurt as they tried to stop car that also rammed a police vehicle.
