Six student media awards for UCD

University College Dublin won six awards, including newspaper of the year, at the National Student Media Awards 2006 in Dublin last night.

At an event attended by some 1,000 students at Spirit, Middle Abbey Street, UCD claimed the awards for newspaper (University Observer) and journalist of the year (Sorcha Nic Mhathúna), while the prize for editor of the year was presented to Andrew Payne, editor of Ireland's oldest student newspaper, Trinity News.

Awards were made in 25 categories to students from nine colleges around the country.

The award for radio production (news) went to Fergal D'Arcy of DIT Aungier Street, while the winner of the radio production (arts) category was Amy Rose Harte of DCU.

Eammon Nolan from Ballyfermot CFE won the short film category. Other winners included Griffith College's the Circular (small college publication), Trinity News' James Von Simson (arts feature writer) and Christine Bohan (colour writer), DCU's Will Devane (photographer), Simon Ward of UCD's College Tribune (layout and design) and DCU students Amy Breen and Lisa McCaghy in the TV journalist category.

Student authors whose work was recognised were Noel Burke of Griffith College (film script) and UCD's John Holten (short story).
