Gunmen in the Somali capital Mogadishu took six UN staff hostage today in fighting that erupted following an attack on a compound of the Medecins Sans Frontieres charity, a UN source said.

"Six have been kidnapped", the source said.
"They were taken hostage but what is happening now is up in the air ... For the most part we believe they are safe".
Witnesses said earlier that at least seven people including a Western national were killed in the fighting between government forces and those of Somali warlord Muse Sudi Yalahow, who controls much of southwestern Mogadishu.
