Sixty guests go west as Inisturk island celebrates the first wedding held in local church in 36 years

Inisturk, an island off the west coast with 100 inhabitants, played host to its first wedding in 36 years at the weekend.

On Friday evening the island's development manager, Mr Dave Fitzgibbon, married Ms Elaine McFarland in the island's tiny church. Beacy and Packie O'Toole were the last couple to be married on the island.

The party left the mainland about 5 p.m., from the small harbour four miles outside Louisburgh, Co Mayo, braving the wind blowing up the coastline. The Inisturk ferry, the Caher Star, took them on the nine-mile sea journey to the island.

On the island, barrels were being tapped at a furious rate in the community club. Ms Mary Catherine Heanue prepared enough food for an invading army, while the young men of the island secured the marquee with an extra rope or two. "It's not too far from the edge of the cliff and it'd be a disaster if it took off in the middle of a good polka," one of them said.

More than 60 guests from all over Ireland arrived safely on the island just after 6.30 p.m. The priest, Father Ned Crosby, was already waiting in the church.

Once formalities were out of the way, it was full steam ahead to the community club, where a DJ got the guests dancing. Twelve hours later, as dawn broke, the singing started.
