A "package of awards" is to be made to a man "mistakenly and wrongly" named in a 1999 newspaper report as being involved in a serious assault on an American writer in Sligo, the High Court heard yesterday.

Mr Glen Monaghan (22), a bank official, of Pearse Road, Sligo, had sued Sligo Weekender Ltd, with registered offices at Castle Street, Sligo.

He alleged that a court report published in the paper on October 22nd, 1999, indicated he was one of two men implicated in assaulting a writer, Mr Robert Drake (36), on January 31st, 1999.

In court yesterday as the case was due to open, Mr Liam Reidy SC, for Mr Monaghan, told Mr Justice Lavan and a jury the matter had been settled. An agreed statement read in court said that, in an article headlined "Gay Attack - Two Guilty" reference was "mistakenly and wrongly made" to Mr Monaghan as being one of those involved.
