Slow waltz with a brush wows many hearts in Drumlish

While most of the national attention at the weekend was focused on the All-Ireland hurling final and the Electric Picnic, a festival of a completely different and far more intimate nature took place in the village of Drumlish, Co Leitrim.

Each competitor was asked to perform a party piece and one of the male contestants won over many hearts when he danced on stage with a brush in a bid to symbolise the frustrations and shortage of women faced by Drumlish bachelors.

Last year's census highlighted that Drumlish had the highest proportion of single men in Ireland. Once the locals got word of this they decided something had to be done, and through a combination of community spirit and hard graft the Meet Your Match event was organised as part of the Marquee in Drumlish festival.

Ten local lads were picked to represent their native Drumlish and 10 girls from Dublin, Drogheda and beyond were flown in by helicopter to take part in the matchmaking festival.

Although Drumlish has a population of only 700 it is renowned as a country music haven and two local stars, Declan Nerney and Mick Flavin, succeeded in drawing crowds in excess of 2,000 to the marquee at the weekend. The atmosphere was electric and local people said they hadn't seen the likes since Drumlish contested the county final in 1996.

Each night in the marquee the guys and gals who were looking for love were quizzed on stage about their experiences with their fellow lonely hearts and they were all on top form in a bid to impress the judging panel who were faced with the tough task of selecting a festival king and queen.

Even though there is competition to win the contest, the local lads say they are not going to let things come between them. "We are all friends and it has been brilliant meeting these 10 girls. We've had great fun mixing and mingling and the weekend has been a success in bringing plenty of talent to the town," contestant Patrick Tully said.

Late last night the judging panel declared Patrick Tully from Drumlish and Celine Burke from Dublin the king and queen of the festival, and for their efforts they will be brought to Declan Nerney's annual hooley in the sun in Spain.

Drumlish publican Margaret Dillon said the festival had been a big boost to the village with her sources telling her there may be more than one couple who have met their match in Drumlish. "The weekend has been a great success and it has put Drumlish on the map. Some of the girls have already said they will come back again and who knows we could end up with a festival as big as Lisdoonvarna on our hands."
