Russia's Roman Sludnov broke his 100-metres breaststroke world record at the world swimmingchampionships today.
Sludnov, the only man to swim the event in under one minute, clocked 59.94 seconds in the semifinals to slice 0.03 seconds from the 59.97 markhe set at the Russian championships in Moscow on June 29ththis year.
The 21-year-old student from Omsk, third at the turn behind American Ed Moses and Canadian Morgan Knabe, turned up the pace on the returnlength, and his rivals had no answer to the Russian's smooth power.
Moses, who held the world record before Sludnov lowered it twice in two days, finished second in the adjacent lane in one minute 0.55 seconds.
