A man in his early 60s was found dead in a house in Killarney, Co Kerry, on Monday night after a neighbour spotted that the windows of the house were smoke-blackened.
Sean O'Keeffe (61) was found dead in the sitting room-kitchen of his single-storey house at Pinewood estate in the Park Road area of the town when gardaí entered the house at around 7.30pm on Monday.
According to Sgt Ray Walsh, of Killarney Garda station, there was a lot of smoke damage to the room, but no evidence of flames.
A heater or possibly a cooker which had extinguished itself may have been the cause of the emissions, and it is suspected that Mr O'Keeffe died of smoke inhalation.
After forensic examination of the scene, his body was removed late on Monday night to Kerry General Hospital.
Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster was carrying out a postmortem examination at the hospital yesterday.
Mr O'Keeffe was a native of Killarney and was well known in the town.
