A soccer fan who hit another man with a bar stool after he called his girlfriend "scum" for supporting Leeds United has been remanded on bail for sentence by Judge Frank O'Donnell.

Paul Reid (29), single, Eden more Avenue, Raheny, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assaulting Mr Shane McIlkenny, occasioning him actual bodily harm, in March, 1997. He has no previous convictions.

Mr Luigi Rea, defending, said Reid had paid £850 compensation to Mr McIlkenny (28), from Maryville Road, Raheny, and a further £11,500 is to be paid.

Garda Brian Sullivan told prosecuting counsel Mr Patrick Marrinan that Reid had been drinking with a group of friends, including the victim. Mr McIlk enny called Reid's girlfriend "scum" after she voiced her support for Leeds. Reid then hit Mr McIlkenny over the head with a bar stool. Garda Sullivan said the victim received 10 stitches, six to his forehead and four to one eye, and had made a full recovery.

Mr Rea asked Judge O'Donnell to take into consideration that his client has two children in his care. Judge O'Donnell said Reid had to "work this violent attack off" and remanded him on bail until July 8th.
