Pamplona - Two former senior figures in Spain's Socialist party were sentenced yesterday to seven and 11 years in prison for receiving kickbacks in return for awarding public contracts.
Gabriel Urralburu, the former regional leader in the northern region of Navarra, received an 11-year term and was ordered to pay a 780 million peseta (£3.7 million) fine. Regional transport minister, Antonio Aragon, was given a seven-year sentence and fined 650 million pesetas.
