Soham child killer Ian Huntley was attacked and injured in jail, a British prison source confirmed today.

Huntley, who was jailed for murdering 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, was hit in the face by a fellow inmate at Belmarsh jail, south east London.

The 30-year-old was said to be playing cards with a prison officer outside his cell when the prisoner came up and punched him.

Huntley was believed to have suffered only "minor bruising" in the attack, which happened on Thursday, and was taken to the prison's health unit.

It is the thought to be the first time Huntley has been attacked in jail since he was arrested in 2002 and held on remand.

He was handed two life sentences by the Old Bailey in December.
