European Union foreign policy chief Mr Javier Solana said today he will go to Washington on Monday and Tuesday for talks on the Middle East.

His visit to America will follow a visit to Jeddah centred around the Saudi peace initiative.

Mr Solana told the press after meeting Egyptian President Mr Hosni Mubarak he would go to Amman later today as part of efforts to relaunch the Middle East peace process.

He said that Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz had told him in Jeddah yesterday that the prince wanted his peace plan to be an "initiative of the Arab world" that would be endorsed at the Arab summit to be held in Beirut in four weeks.

The EU supported this idea, Mr Solana said. "We hope very much that this will contribute to bringing peace in the region," he said.

Mr Solana had gone to Jeddah after receiving encouraging signals on the Saudi initiative from both Israel and the Palestinians. "The important thing is peace, to create a dynamic which is new," Mr Solana said.
