A British soldier who was shot at his barracks in the North has died, the army confirmed today.

A British soldier who was shot at his barracks in the North has died, the army confirmed today.

Corporal Anthony Green died in Altnagelvin Hospital, Co Derry, last night after being shot at Shackleton Barracks, Ballykelly, on Wednesday.

Corporal Green, a 25-year-old from Carlisle, Cumbria, was a cook with the Royal Logistics Corps attached to the 1st Battalion, The Royal Scots.

A British army spokesman said the married man's family were at the hospital when he died.

RUC officers are investigating his death and a spokesman said a report was being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. One man has already been questioned.

The battalion's commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Steven Telfer, said: "Corporal Green was a most popular man who will be very sadly missed by all of us."
