A soldier, Private Aidan Laverty (19), Ballybofey, Co Donegal, has died from head injuries received after his rifle was discharged at Finner military camp, Co Donegal, at about 9 a.m. on Friday. An Army spokesman said Private Laverty was alone when the incident occurred and an inquiry would be held. The Garda said foul play was not suspected.

It is understood Private Laverty was mounted for duty on the Border and was issued with a gun and live ammunition. He then said he had to go to his room to collect something. Some 10 minutes later, he was found by colleagues in his room with head injuries.

A week ago, Private Gerald Devine (23), a member of the FCA 16th Infantry Battalion, was found dead beside the firing range at Carnagh, Co Roscommon. Foul play is not suspected.
