It wasn't quite the Guinness Book of Records achievement of 36,330 push-ups in 24 hours performed by a Canadian in 1993, but it still gave one pause for thought.

The people in Collins Barracks in Cork are into fitness in a fairly serious way, and their very lifestyle requires them to produce muscles where most people don't have them.

Cpl Eddie Lynch of the First Field Artillery Regiment is one of them. He was wondering what he might be able to do for the people in the blighted area of Yugoslavia where the Kosovars have had to endure such cruel suffering.

He came up with the idea of performing 10,000 push-ups over a 24-hour period and, through sponsor ship by friends and family members, believed he could raise £1,000 if he could complete the feat.

He started the push-ups at 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday and completed them at 10 a.m. yesterday. During the marathon session he had different breaks including sessions with a masseur to help his tired muscles. He took a high-calorie diet to ensure the energy intake was sufficient to see him through and during the training period he put himself through 4,000 push-ups a day for four weeks.

Cpl Lynch (35) is married with a daughter, Shaunna (8), and is a physical training instructor at the barracks. He lives at Dripsey in Co Cork.

Eight independent counters were on hand to ensure that the 10,000 push-ups were performed correctly.
