London - The Welsh nationalist party, Plaid Cymru, elected a new leader yesterday, a former solicitor, Mr Ieuan Wyn Jones.
Mr Jones (51), a member of parliament as well as the Welsh assembly, succeeds Mr Dafydd Wigley, who stood down as party leader in May for health reasons.
Mr Jones won 4,834 votes in the leadership contest, against 789 for the Welsh assembly member, Ms Helen Mary Jones, and 598 for Ms Jill Evans, a member of the European parliament.
