At least 29 people were killed and 60 injured today when their overcrowded bus crashed in South Africa.

Survivors told police the bus driver seemed to be falling asleep moments before the bus crashed 70 metres down an embankment near Kokstad, about 250 kilometres southwest of Durban.

"They said he was falling asleep and this could have been the cause of the accident," said Mr Colin Govender, spokesman for the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate.

Five of the dead were children. Most of the passengers were gold miners traveling home for the Easter holiday.
