At least 47 people died in a stampede at a football match in Johannesburg this evening.

At least 47 people died in a stampede at a football match in Johannesburg this evening.

Television footage from the ground showed several dozen people lying on the pitch surrounded by medical personnel and others being helped away. Many bodies were covered with blankets.

The stampede came as spectators tried to barge into the already full Ellis Park stadium near the centre of the city, and police fired tear gas.

State SABCtelevision said the dead included women and children.

It reported that too many tickets had been sold for the national league match between the Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Both clubs are in Johannesburg and are the most popular clubs in the country.
